Southern Ocean Lodge

PROJECT SPOTLIGHT | Gildail Developments | Hanson Bay, Kangaroo Island

Project Summary

After the devastating bushfires went through Kangaroo Island, Southern Ocean Lodge accommodation was sadly one of the infrastructures lost on the island. Gildail Developments engaged SCG to be a part of the rebuild for the luxury accommodation. SCG provided over 1,500m3 of ready mix concrete in a range of different specifications over the period of 10-12 months.

Project Challenges

The weather was one of the challenges we faced for this project. Due to the location of the project being on the edge of a cliff overlooking the ocean, we experienced many days pouring in the rain, wind and cold temperatures. Another Challenge we faced was the waiting time onsite. Each concrete truck generally took time to unload due to the particular structures and levels the concrete was required for, as well as having a 75min travel time to the job site.

The SCG Solution

  • SCG had to ensure whilst the concrete spent a great deal of time in the bowl, it was adequately monitored and maintained a consistent slump without affecting the strength. SCG used specific additives within the mix design and altered it with the client’s preferences to avoid wasted or spoilt product.
  • SCG kept in close communications with the client to ensure a well organised schedule of deliveries was forecasted and scheduled to work around environmental factors such as weather conditions.

We chose Southern Contracting Group due to their local presence on Kangaroo Island and their willingness to assist during the design phase of the project. They provided a professional service, were well organised, communicated effectively and supplied a good quality product. Our project was completed onsite and within budget due to the timely pours remaining on schedule set out with SCG. Given the uncertainty of the construction industry, it is important to have a partnership with people you can trust and who hold the same standard as your own. Gildail Developments is proud of its association with SCG.
